FESTIVAL OVERVIEW:

Following the success of last year’s Bare Root festival, this year we’re teaming up with even more folk in Macon County to bring an increasingly spectacular festival to Franklin, NC. Conceived by Winding Stair Farm & Nursery, Bare Root is inspired by the local community, many of whom you can meet during this weekend experience as you explore the various culinary, creative and musical events that form the festival.

Appalachian Ace Hardware presents Food & Fun!

Friday 23rd August: 6:30pm – 8:30pm
Location: Appalachian Ace Hardware [75 W Palmer St]

BEER: Cans of Lazy Hiker Brewing Co. craft beers will be on-hand
FOOD: Burgers are provided by local purveyors of high quality, humanely raised meat, Brasstown Beef.

Experience the legendary grilling talents of Ace’s Josh in Downtown Franklin.  With locally-sourced food and beer, this event is a great start to a food-centric weekend in Franklin, gateway community to the Appalachian Trail.  Meet the locals and stay awhile.  Bring a chair and whatever you need to be comfortable and stay awhile!!

Just up the road, you can continue your evening at the Lazy Hiker Brewery, to sample more of their ales and beers or other drinks at their AT-inspired bar, or move on to Sylva, see next event:

Location: 200 Block. E Palmer Street.

Kick-start your Saturday at our local Farmer’s Market, tailgate-style, established in 2001 by a group of local organic growers, there’s always something different here. Fresh-made breads and baked products,  jams,  jellies and other unique jarred and pickled goods, local meat and produce (of course!), fresh flowers, arts, crafts, and more.

Don’t forget to stop by our Farm Stand and say hey to Mary-Martin & Michelle!  It’s high season at our 3,000-ft altitude farm so the produce is plentiful and mouth-wateringly fresh!

Bluegrass ‘n’ BBQ at the Nursery

Join us at Winding Stair Nursery for live music from one of the best bands in WNC: Ol’ Dirty Bathtub!  We can’t say enough about ODB and how enjoyable they are to watch, listen and enjoy, but here’s their official line: NC’s Premier Acoustic Party Band. Ol’ Dirty Bathtub takes bluegrass to the edge with high energy Americana jams featuring dynamic guitar riffs and vibrant dobro solos. They give progressive rock and hip hop nods to 80s and 90s hits.

Sit back and enjoy with Franklin’s finest BBQ from Fat Buddies! They smoke ‘em slow and baste ‘em good. Their sauces are made from scratch and just incredible! Fat Buddies have 2 locations, Franklin & Waynesville; but, today only, they’re bringing all their tasty BBQ-y goodness to serve guests at Winding Stair Nursery. Expect to see pulled pork, sandwiches, sides and ribs!!

Learn more about the past, present, and future of food and farming in Macon County during this panel with local producers and historians. Our lands, creeks, rivers, and woods have long been a fertile pantry, with unique rewards and difficulties for our ancestors, ourselves, and those who follow us.

Bring chairs and whatever you’d need to be comfortable to sit back, listen, and ask questions!

Bresnahan and Brews

Saturday 24th August: 6:00pm  until sold out
Location: Currahee Brewing Company: 100 Lakeside Drive.

Adam Bresnahan, Chef at 4118 Kitchen + Bar in Highlands, NC, is doing some guest-cheffing!  Adam’s gonna work with the local farm folks from Macon County to prepare and present a dish at the Evening Market.  Last year, Hannah from Yonder in Franklin served up lamb flatbreads and tacos and sold out as fast as people could get in line, so come early to sample Adam’s twist on this unique culinary experience.

Chef Bresnahan has taken the role of Executive Chef at Highlands newest restaurant, 4118 Kitchen + Bar where he and his team focus on regionally sourced products to provide the guests with a memorable dining experience serving New American Fare freshness and seasonality. Chef Bresnahan is also the Founder of PULP Foods, a sauce and spice company blending unique flavors for the home table.

Live Music at the River Stage

This summer, Currahee Brewing, introduced their new River Stage for outdoor music enjoyment, so now you can savor one of their craft ales or lagers (they also have other beverages at the bar) as you enjoy the evening, listening to live music.  Music tonight is from Crossfire: Where Country Meets Rock!! This 4-piece band are a mix between classic rock and outlaw country. (Formally known as The Moonshine Creek Band).

If you’re staying for the weekend or have some extra time in Franklin, check out DISCOVER FRANKLIN for local waterfalls, as well as other activities, including many wonderful hiking options (along the Appalachian Trail, Bartram Trail, etc), river relaxing spots, tubing, and more!  (You can also learn more about Bartram by joining the nursery as we team up with Alarka Expeditions in September for a Bartram-centric week (9th-13th September).
