Class: Bonsai – growing ornamental, artificially dwarfed trees or shrubs.

Learning the Joys of Bonsai

The art of growing ornamental, artificially dwarfed trees or shrubs.

Saturday October 14th @ 10am.
This class is led by Jim Binnall

bonsai talk

We will have local bonsai enthusiast, Jim Binnall joining us to talk about and demonstrate bonsai basics. He will bring along samples of soil plus, of course, the trees and plants he works on. Jim can offer private bonsai classes for individuals or small groups, and occasionally can be talked into selling one of his own works!  Mostly though he does this for fun, not for profit.

About Jim and Bonsai:

12+ years ago, Jim’s interest in bonsai was stirred by a purchase of a couple of pre-bonsai (plants that were grown and raised with bonsai in mind) from a big box store.  However, prior to that he maintained around 20 topiaries in his yard, which require a similar type of care and attention.  To date, Jim has worked on and accumulated approximately 125 trees  – both coniferous and deciduous. His favorite tree to work on at the moment is the Juniperus procumbens ‘Nana’ (Japanese Garden Juniper); however, both Maples and Elms are close seconds.  As we were writing this introduction, Jim got really excited about Azaleas too:

I also have bonsai from Apple trees, Quince, Pomegranate , Cotoneaster and Azaleas……..actually……..azaleas are my favorite!

Jim learned the art of bonsai by reading books and asking questions.  And, as is often the best way to learn these days, he took advantage of all that YouTube has to offer, with its wealth of information on how to do just about anything.
