The Farm: Mountain and Valley | Winding Stair Farm

We are proud to run our farm with a sustainable and ethical approach.

The Farm: Mountain and Valley

The Mountain Farm is where it all began, alongside the former Rainbow Springs Campground and forming part of a private residence. It sits along the Nantahala River, fed by the headwaters in the ridges just above it.

This high-elevation farm, located near the Appalachian Trail, is primarily dedicated to pasture-raised Icelandic sheep and free-range poultry.

We are committed to sustainable agriculture- allowing our animals to graze freely on open pastures- with small supplements of organic, non-GMO feed as needed. A small portion of the land is dedicated to cold-weather vegetable gardening, taking advantage of the cooler mountain climate. This location is also home to our grist mill, where we produce stone-ground grits and cornmeal using traditional methods.

The Valley Farm is directly adjacent to the retail nursery in Franklin, NC, just off the Highlands Road. It is here that the majority of our Certified Naturally Grown produce is tended to. We use time-honored practices to grow fresh, seasonal, local produce for you and your family.  We have a farm propagation heated house for seed starting and taking care of small seedlings in the winter. This hot house was converted from an old hoop house for the nursery with help from a grant from WNC AgOptions Award.

Our Farm raises spring vegetable plant starts using the same sustainable practices we use for our own farm fields. You can plant these at just the right time in the season (after the last frost) and skip the weeks and worry it takes to grow from seed, knowing your vegetables had a healthy start in life.
